Free File Sync and tips on Disks and Backup

Hi guys, I decided to make this post after searching all over the Internet for solutions to the fact that FreeFileSync gets detected by anti malware software.

Quick and basic intro

Free File Sync is a Free Software that allows anyone to Backup and Sync their files to another disk or external hard drive.

It's really awesome in it's simplicity and power, combining the possibility of making just updates to the destination, mirror perfectly the destination with the source files or make it two ways so that if you edit, change the name or the contents of any file on both the source folder or destination folder, they will update in the other side accordingly.

Real Time Backup possible..

The most amazing part is that you can do this automatically and Real Time with the RealTimeSync.exe that is included.
You just have to configure the first time the backup and Sync details on FreeFileSync.exe, like source folder, destination of the backup folder, type of sync (Update, Mirror or Two Ways) and when you are happy with the settings you can chose to save as batch job.. on File menu.

After doing this, you open the RealTimeSync.exe and click on File -> Open to chose the batch file you just saved.
Done.

After doing this steps, every time you create a new file, write on an existing text document, edit an image or video and so on, Real Time Sync will automatically (and in less than 10 seconds), save a copy of that file on the destination folder you chose.

The software files

It's super easy to use and the original link to the software is freefilesync.org, however, the original installation file comes with an offer to install other software included, this is not the problem since it can be declined, the problem however, is that this method of including other software installation on a program, makes it detected by some anti malware programs or anti virus as being a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program - OpenCandy).

What I did was run it inside sandboxie and extracting the contents later, this way I could pack the whole software on a rar file afterwards without any detection of malware or virus.

Edit:
The most recent versions of the software don't get detected as malware anymore, looks like it got fixed, great news.

Combine it with auto save

Amazing little software, exactly what I was looking for to create backup copies as I created new files. Since I create a lot of content on my disk all the time from texts, videos, images and more, it had become quite hard to backup it all.. this app makes it all while I am creating..

Combining this with the ability to auto save the work from several programs, like Word, Power Director and others, it's just brilliant.
Because when you create a new text or video, as an example, the software auto saves it every few minutes and then Real Time Sync automatically backups it to the other disk or partition.

Thank the software developer

Hope this is as useful as it as been to me and you should donate to the software developer if you like the software because that is the reason he places other software on the install file, so that he can get some income from advertisement, since he offers the application for free.

Ideal system configuration and backup (in my opinion)

If you have a chance of installing 2 disks inside your computer or laptop:
  • Your first disk in the computer should be an SSD drive (Solid State Drive, have a storage technology similar to your SD cards and are extremely fast since they don't have moving parts - My advice here is for 120Gb or 60Gb to keep it cheaper) and here you install you O.S. (like windows or linux, for ex.) and all your programs. This way you get maximum performance on system boot and software launch and use.
  • Your second disk in the computer should be a normal HDD (a Hard Drive with the most capacity you can get your hands on for the price you can afford) avoiding the latest launches and biggest size available as this tend to be really expensive. Here you place all your documents, images, musics and videos. As a more advanced tip, you can use HWINFO software to find out your motherboard capacity in terms of Sata interface, this way you can know if you are using the full new Sata III hard drives capabilities in terms of speed.
  • As a crucial backup, your third disk should be an external USB3.0 hard drive, preferably portable since you don't need extra power to run it. With this disk you make an exact copy of all your files on your PC using Free File Sync, for example, and keep these files absolutely safe by just adding the external drive for backup and then removing the usb cable when done.
Why is this important?
Because some of the most nasty forms of viruses today are called Ransomware and they encrypt all your computer files and ask the user for a ransom in exchange for the key to decrypt the files. The only way to be 100% safe is to backup all your files to an external drive that is not hardwired to your pc when/if you get the virus on the PC.

If you can only have 1 disk inside your computer:
  • You should have an Hybrid (which is a Disk that combines a large hard drive with a small part SSD and the firmware of the disk decides automatically which software you use the most and places it on the SSD part of the disk so you can access it quicker). Here you install your O.S. (windows, linux, etc), all your programs and place all your files (documents, videos, music, etc)
  • As a second disk you should have an external USB3.0 portable Hard Drive to backup all your files as an exact mirror of the ones you have in the PC.

Real time video comparison on HDD (Hard Disk Drive), SSD (Solid State Drive) and SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) to have a real notion of speed differences.

With these configurations you get the maximum performance for the best price and with this backup software you get peace of mind that all your files are safe as you create and modify them daily.

You can also transform your old hard disk drives to external backup drives very easily, just by getting a cheap enclosure that will allow you to read and write files to this otherwise useless Disks.
